Sports Premium
PE and sport are an important part of life at Garfield. Alongside two weekly PE lessons, pupils have a choice of a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities. We have also enjoyed great success in competition in recent years, including winning local and borough wide competitions in basketball and football, alongside second place finishes for netball and cricket teams.
Sport and sporting values are intertwined in Garfield’s school culture. In particular, the school values of ‘fun’, ‘respect’, ‘everyone’ and ‘discover’ reflect the wider aims and impact of sporting participation. But sport at Garfield goes further than just playing sport: we celebrate sporting achievement in termly sports assemblies; pupils write reports from competitions for the newsletter; we join in nationwide events such as Sports Relief and National Sports Week; we host training and workshops with specialists to upskill pupils, for example in skipping or cycling; year 6 sports leaders help organise and run activities; and our PE specialist teacher provides training to the other teachers so that they can further engage their classes in sport and physical activity.
All of this would not be possible without the PE Premium funding from the government. This money is allocated to primary schools to improve their provision for PE, sport and physical activity. Click below to see how we have spent the money so far, what the impact has been on our pupils, and how we are planning to spend the latest allocation of money over the next academic year.
Thanks to PE Premium funding, we now have more children than ever attending extra-curricular clubs, with a particular boost for girls’ participation, which is now almost level with that of boys.
Swimming at Garfield
Swimming is part of the curriculum in Year 5. Our Year 5 pupils attend 10 swimming sessions at Arnos Pool during the school day.
