At Garfield Primary School we believe that physical education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is a unique and vital contributor to a pupil’s physical development and well-being. Our curriculum covers a wide range of sports and activities, from dance and gymnastics to football and cricket. PE lessons, which take place twice a week, offer pupils the opportunity to develop skills and demonstrate them in a competitive environment. Pupils learn to work independently and in groups, and all pupils play a role in evaluating their work and that of others.

PE and sport play a wider role at Garfield than just the lessons, they are part of school life: we have a dedicated lunchtime rota offering pupils the chance to play competitive sports at lunch time; we have regular PE assemblies and celebrate other school wide events such as Sports Relief and Sports Days; we provide a wide range of extra-curricular sports clubs and opportunities; and we have a team of year 6 sports leaders who help with the organisation of school sport.

Competition is an important part of the sporting experience here at Garfield: in 2016-2017, we competed in a wide range of borough-wide and local tournaments, festivals and leagues. Some highlights included a fantastic performance in the Enfield Dance Festival and a 100% winning record for our year 3 and 4 cricket team!

Pupils at Garfield take part in school swimming lessons in year 5 as part of the Enfield Swimming scheme. The below table shows the progress that last year’s cohort achieved:
