PE

At Garfield Primary School we believe that physical education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is a unique and vital contributor to a pupil’s physical development and well-being. Our curriculum covers a wide range of sports and activities, from dance and gymnastics to football and cricket. PE lessons, which take place twice a week, offer pupils the opportunity to develop skills and demonstrate them in a competitive environment. Pupils learn to work independently and in groups, and all pupils play a role in evaluating their work and that of others.

Sport and sporting values are intertwined in Garfield’s school culture. In particular, the school values of ‘fun’, ‘respect’, ‘everyone’ and ‘discover’   reflect the wider aims and impact of sporting participation. But PE and sport play a wider role at Garfield than just the lessons, they are part of whole school life: we have a dedicated lunchtime rota offering pupils the chance to play competitive sports at lunch time; we have regular PE assemblies and celebrate other school wide and nationwide events such as Sports Relief and Sports Week; we provide a wide range of extra-curricular sports clubs and opportunities; and we have a team of year 6 sports leaders who help with the organisation of school sport.

Competition is an important part of the sporting experience here at Garfield: in 2017-2018, we competed in a wide range of borough-wide and local tournaments, festivals and leagues. Some highlights included winning our local football league; winning the Enfield borough basketball tournament and representing the borough at the London Youth Games; second place in our local netball league; a fantastic performance in the Enfield Dance Festival; and the cricket team winning one of their matches by more than 50 runs!

Pupils at Garfield take part in school swimming lessons in year 5 as part of the Enfield Swimming scheme. The below table shows the progress that last year’s cohort achieved:
